Briarwood Beach Access Review: Glynnwood Park Road Widening
March 18, 2025
Glynnwood Park Road Widening
The widening of Glynnwood Park Road is scheduled for the Summer of 2025. This improvement addresses long-standing issues with parking conflicts adjacent the Briarwood Beach access. Upgrading the road to the required standard will ensure emergency access and provide safe roadside parking during high seasonal use, while also enhancing pedestrian and cyclist capacity.
This improvement was approved by Council at the Regular Council Meeting of September 11, 2023 and also endorsed by the Fire Department to ensure adequate emergency access during times of high seasonal beach use.
The Briarwood public beach access, located off Glynnwood Park Road and opposite Briarwood Place, is a popular destination for local residents. It offers easy access, beautiful beaches, and warm summer waters. Due to its high usage and the lack of dedicated parking facilities, parking conflicts have arisen, leading to localized roadside parking restrictions. Council have committed to initiating improvements to this popular destination.
For details on the road widening project please see the image below. The proposed project will widen the roadway approximately 1-1.5 meters in order to meet the existing zoning requirement. Upgrading the road to the required standard will ensure emergency access and provide safe roadside parking during high seasonal use, while also enhancing pedestrian and cyclist capacity.
A portion of the site is adjacent an archaeological protection area and the District has engaged our Archaeologist, Millennia Research Limited, to conduct hand testing prior to construction to meet the requirements of an Archaeologist Impact Assessment (AIA) under the Heritage Conservation Act (HCA).
Environmental protection is ensured through conformation to our Environmental Protection Specification 01561 provided in the Master Municipal Construction Documents (MMCD). This specification requires the Contractor adhere to all environmental requirements applicable to the work and site. No additional environmental permits are required for this site.
